Here are some tips to fighting winter blues:
- Sit by windows: whether you are at home or out to eat, sit by the window to get as much natural light as possible in this dark season.
- Go outside: yes, itís cold, rainy, windy, and sometimes snowy, but bundle up and get out there! Take advantage of the nice breaks in the weather, too.
- Reach out to friends and family: while it is true that people are very busy this time of year, most people have time for at least a quick 5-minute phone chat.
- Go on vacation: if you have time and can afford it, go somewhere sunny and warm to fight the blues that often come with the dark and grey weather.
- Exercise, sleep, healthy diet: as always, these things continue to be important. Try to be active at least three days per week for about 30 minutes, sleep at least 7-8 hours, and eat healthy foods as often as holiday parties will allow. Donít be afraid to have some treats, though, too.
- Readjust your attitude: this season can be a time of great joy, so focus on the things that make you feel happy and optimistic. You can adjust your attitude just by what you focus your thoughts on!
If you feel that you are slipping into a depression that you cannot handle on your own, get support by calling a counselor/therapist for help.
